Hard water is water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium. It shows up first on the things you touch every day. Faucet aerators clog with white crust. Shower doors haze over a week after you clean them. Dishes come out of the machine spotted, and towels feel stiff. The bigger cost hides in your water heater. South Jersey well water often runs acidic and carries iron on top of hardness. A softener handles the hardness. It will also strip a small amount of iron. The change most owners notice later is the water heater. It stops filling with scale and lasts closer to its rated life. Down in Cape May County, homes tie into deeper confined aquifers. Hardness numbers vary block to block there, so we test rather than assume.
Water softener repair makes sense when the tank and resin are still sound. The parts that fail first are the control valve, the injector, and the float in the brine tank. A salt bridge is common too, where salt hardens into a crust and stops dissolving into the brine. The unit still runs its cycle, but no salt water reaches the resin. Hard water comes through the tap. We open the brine tank, break the bridge, clean the injector, and test the cycle. Most of those calls are one visit.
Softener replacement is the better call once a unit passes ten to fifteen years. It is also the call when the resin is worn out. Worn resin shows as soft water that fades a day or two after regeneration, even with a full salt tank. Sizing is the other reason people replace. A unit bought for two people struggles once the house holds five, and it regenerates constantly to keep up. We pull the hardness number again, count fixtures and people, and set the new grain capacity from there. The old unit comes out the same day the new one goes in.
An install starts with the hardness test and a look at where your water comes in. On well systems the softener goes after the pressure tank, so the pump is not pushing through resin under load. On city water it ties in after the meter and before the water heater. We need a drain within reach for the regeneration discharge and an outlet for the valve. A standard changeout runs a few hours. A first time install with new piping and a drain line takes longer. We tell you which one you have before we start.
When the softener is in, we run a manual regeneration and check the water at the tap. You should read at or near zero grains after that cycle. We show you how much salt the tank takes and how often to add it. We also set the bypass, so you can shut the unit out of the line if you need to.
