Clayton sits on the Coastal Plain, where the ground is layered sand instead of bedrock. The top layer is the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system, a stack of sand, fine gravel, and clay. It is a water table aquifer, so the water sits fairly close to the surface. The borough pulls its public supply from three aquifers, and Kirkwood-Cohansey is the shallowest. Depth still changes lot to lot, from Silver Lake down through the Delsea Drive corridor. Clayton was a glass town first, back when the maps still said Fislerville, and the ground has not changed.
The water out of that sand has a personality. USGS testing on the unconfined Kirkwood-Cohansey found the groundwater is acidic, soft, and low in alkalinity. Acidic water eats copper pipe and leaves blue-green stains in the sink. Iron rides along with it, sometimes well above the state secondary standard of 0.3 milligrams per liter. That is the orange in the toilet tank and the rust color in the wash. Push east into Franklin Township, toward Piney Hollow and the Pinelands edge, and the streams run cedar water. That tea color comes from cedar tannins and iron, and the water runs acidic there too.
New wells are only part of the week. Most of the phone calls are pumps. A submersible pump quits, or a pressure tank loses its charge, and the house goes dry. We run well pump repair and replacement 24/7, since wells break on weekends the same as weekdays. Older houses in the borough and out on the township roads often still run a jet pump. Converting one to a submersible usually buys back pressure and quiets the basement. A constant pressure system is the next step when the shower drops off every time a hose runs.
Water treatment is the other half of the work. An acid neutralizer raises pH so the water stops chewing on copper pipe. An iron filter takes out the orange. Sulfur turns up on some wells, and that is the rotten egg smell in the hot water. A water softener handles hardness once the rest is under control. We test first, then size the equipment to what the test says. When an old well comes out of service, we seal it to NJDEP abandonment standards. We also drill geothermal loops and commercial wells, and we install whole house supply piping.
