Harrison Township sits right on the line between New Jersey's Inner and Outer Coastal Plain. A belt of low hills runs through it, built from sand and marl laid down by an old sea. Farmers dug that marl for fertilizer in the 1800s, and the pits gave up fossil bones. Four formations outcrop under the township. Two of them carry water, the Wenonah-Mount Laurel and the Kirkwood-Cohansey. Two of them are green, glauconite heavy layers, the Navesink and the Hornerstown. Those two hold water back instead of giving it up.
Most drinking water in Harrison comes from deeper down, out of the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy. That system is the principal formation under the township and it feeds the public wells and most private ones. It does not reach the surface here. It outcrops way off by the Delaware River, which is why wells that tap it are drilled deep. The whole township also falls inside New Jersey's Water Supply Critical Area Number 2. Water companies there work under yearly limits on how much they can pump from it. Some private wells instead pull from the shallower Wenonah-Mount Laurel. Older subdivisions sometimes sit on the thin Englishtown, which yields poorly.
It depends on which side of the water line you live on. In the historic village and the newer tracts off Route 322, most homes are on public water. The calls there run to an irrigation well that quit or an old well that needs sealing. Out in Ewan and along Woodstown Road, the house well is the only water there is. Those properties need new well drilling or a well replacement when the old one runs thin. Pump and pressure tank work fills the rest of the schedule.
Water quality is its own job here. South Jersey well water often runs acidic and carries iron. That combination stains fixtures and eats at copper pipe. The shallow Kirkwood-Cohansey sits close to the surface across eastern Harrison. Farm chemicals and septic effluent have both turned up in it. We test the water first, then match the equipment to what the lab reports. That might be an acid neutralizer, an iron filter, or a water softener. Where a house still runs an old jet pump, we convert it to a submersible. Wells taken out of service get sealed to NJDEP standards.
