Bridgeton sits on the coastal plain, and the ground here is sand. Geologists even named a formation after the town. The Bridgeton Formation is clayey sand and gravel, left by old rivers. Under it sits the Cohansey, a thick sand laid down when the sea stood higher. Together they hold the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system, a shallow water table. Bridgeton city wells draw from it, and so do most private wells around the area. The soils on top are Downer and Sassafras sandy loam, the ground that makes this county good for vegetables. Sand drills faster and more predictably than the hard rock up in north Jersey.
That sand shapes the water. Quartz sand carries almost no lime, so groundwater here runs soft and acidic, low in alkalinity. The USGS sampled 370 wells across the Kirkwood-Cohansey and rated the water highly corrosive. Acidic water eats copper pipe and leaves blue-green stains in a sink. The Cumberland County health department reports that high gross alpha and nitrates are common here, along with low pH. Nitrates usually trace back to farm fertilizer and septic systems. Iron is the other regular, and it shows up as orange staining on laundry and fixtures. A test tells you which of these you actually have.
It splits by where you sit. Inside the Bridgeton city line you are on municipal water. The calls we get there are irrigation wells, geothermal loops, and old wells that need sealing. If an unused well is sitting on your lot, NJDEP requires it to be sealed to standard. Buyers and title companies ask about that during a sale. Out past the line, in Upper Deerfield, Hopewell, Fairfield, and Stow Creek, the well is the whole water supply. There the work is new wells and replacements for wells that sanded up or went dry. Then there are the farms. Cumberland County works close to 70,000 acres and ranks first in New Jersey for vegetables, melons, potatoes, and nursery stock. Growers around Seabrook, Rosenhayn, and Shiloh water that ground with well water. Irrigation wells are built to move volume, so casing, screen, and pump get sized for the acreage. Farms drawing large volumes also need an agricultural water use certification through the county. On the treatment side, the two regulars here are an acid neutralizer and an iron filter. Low pH and orange staining are what those fix.
