Egg Harbor Township sits on the Atlantic coastal plain. Under the surface are layers of sand and gravel called the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system. It is a water table aquifer, so it is open to the surface and it recharges from rain. That sand carries water well, and most home wells in the township finish in it. Depth changes across town. A lot near Patcong Creek or Bargaintown Lake reads differently than a lot out toward McKee City. We log what the drill goes through and set the screen in the cleanest sand we hit.
The water in that shallow sand is soft and acidic. USGS work on the Kirkwood-Cohansey found a median pH near 4.9, low alkalinity, and water that is corrosive. Acidic water eats at copper pipe and fittings, and it can pull metal into the water. Iron shows up too, and it stains fixtures and laundry. That is why a new well here often gets an acid neutralizer or an iron filter with it. Deeper down sits the confined Atlantic City 800-foot sand. That is the layer the shore water systems draw from, and it stays separate from the shallow water above.
It splits by where the house sits. Out in Scullville, Farmington, and the back roads around English Creek, the well is the whole water supply. Those jobs are new wells, replacement wells, pump and tank work, and treatment for acid and iron. Closer to the water main, the work changes. Township rules let a property keep an existing well for outside use, like watering the lawn or filling a pool. Those irrigation wells still need pumps, tanks, and repair work, and we handle that. A well that only runs in summer usually needs the most attention in spring.
On the bay side, near West Atlantic City and Seaview Harbor, the shallow water can turn brackish. Salt in a shallow well shows up as a salty taste and hard use on the pump. Screen depth and setting matter more there, and so does the pump we pick. We also seal old wells to NJDEP standards when a property goes onto public water. Commercial sites along Route 40 and near the airport call for bigger supply wells. Geothermal loop drilling runs through the same sand.
