Hammonton sits on the Cohansey Formation. State geologists describe it as white to yellow sand, medium to coarse, with gravel and clay in spots. Parts of it are stained orange brown by iron oxide. Some layers are cemented into hard ironstone. That sand holds the Kirkwood-Cohansey water table aquifer, the shallow groundwater under the whole Pinelands. At a state test hole in Winslow Township, just northwest of town, the Cohansey sand measured 168 feet thick. Clean sand like that is why wells here produce well. Water in that aquifer is fresh and low in dissolved solids. It also runs acidic and corrosive, and iron and manganese can be high in spots. An acid neutralizer raises the pH and an iron filter takes out the rest. Nitrate is the other test that matters in farm country. It moves easily through sandy ground from fertilizer and septic systems. A yearly water test is worth doing on any Hammonton well.
