Cape May County sits on layers of sand and clay, not rock. The top layer is a shallow water-table sand about thirty five feet thick under the peninsula. Under it sit the estuarine sand, the Cohansey, and the Rio Grande water-bearing zone. Deeper still is the confined Atlantic City 800-foot sand. Salt water has been pushing into the shallow layers near the shore for decades. Between 1960 and 1990, saltwater intrusion forced more than 100 domestic wells out of service here. About twenty public and industrial wells went with them.
Depth is often the answer, and it is not a simple one. Confined layers under clay hold fresher water than the sand near the surface. That is why the deeper sands supply most of the shore towns. At the south end the 800-foot sand runs brackish. Cape May City has treated it at a desalination plant since 1998. Farther north, around Cape May Court House and Goshen, the Cohansey still gives clean fresh water at moderate depth. State sentinel wells near the shore show chloride more than double the levels found inland. So the right depth changes with your address, and the well records tell us where to stop.
Most calls here start the same few ways. A new home off the barrier islands needs a first well, in Middle Township or Lower Township. An older well has gone salty or weak, and needs a replacement drilled deeper. Or a pump quits and the house has no water tonight.
