Wells and Water for Mays Landing and Hamilton Township

D.N. Drilling handles well drilling in Mays Landing and across Hamilton Township, Atlantic County. Mays Landing has been the county seat since Atlantic County was formed in 1837. At 110.90 square miles of land, the township has the largest land area of any New Jersey municipality. By total area, it ranks second, behind Galloway Township, where we also drill wells. Hamilton had 27,484 residents at the 2020 census. Its census-designated places are Mays Landing, with 5,603 people, McKee City, with 9,758, and Mizpah, with 479. The Hamilton Township MUA provides drinking water and sewer service out of Mays Landing. Private wells are common in the township, too. From 2002 to 2018, 1,141 Hamilton wells were tested under the state's Private Well Testing Act.

Most residents live in the eastern quarter, a Pinelands Regional Growth Area built up in suburban fashion. Shopping there includes the Hamilton Mall. The western three-quarters is regulated by the New Jersey Pinelands Commission. It remains pine forest with a distinctly rural character. A home on a lot past the water mains needs its own well. The NJDEP well permit comes first, and only a New Jersey licensed well driller can obtain one. On the rig, we run a yield test and measure the flow rate. Casing, drop pipe and a pitless adapter go in, then a pump and a pressure tank sized by drawdown. We file the well record when the work is done. When a pump quits at night, call for 24/7 emergency well pump repair. Estimates are free, and our crew brings more than ten years of drilling experience.

Public water and private wells in Hamilton Township

The MUA's public water comes out of the ground, too. NJDEP's source water assessment for the system, PWSID 0112001, counted 4 wells. They draw from the Kirkwood-Cohansey water-table aquifer system and the deeper Atlantic City 800-foot sand. The system's firm capacity is 6.984 million gallons a day. In June 2024, its peak month, demand averaged 2.807 million gallons a day. Under MUA rules, a cross connection between its water and any other water source is grounds to stop service. So a home on MUA water keeps any well on separate pipes. When a property ties into the MUA, its old well may sit unused. Our well abandonment and sealing service closes that well with grout. We file the decommissioning report with the state when the seal is done.

New Jersey's Private Well Testing Act requires buyers and sellers of homes with private wells to test before closing. From 2002 to 2018, 7.9 percent of sampled Hamilton wells exceeded at least one primary drinking water standard. The rate was 14.3 percent for Atlantic County and 14.5 percent statewide. Gross alpha, the state's stand-in for radium, topped its standard in 5.6 percent of 1,081 wells. Mercury and volatile organic compounds each came in over its standard in 1.0 percent of 1,141 wells. Only about a quarter of New Jersey's drinking water wells have been tested. Most South Jersey mainland wells tap the shallow Kirkwood-Cohansey sands, where water usually runs acidic with iron. It leaves orange stains and eats copper pipe. A lab test shows what your well holds, and we set water treatment sized to the results. Our guide explains how often to test well water in New Jersey.

What well work do Mays Landing properties actually need?

Older wells can fall behind. At the December 2025 drought declaration, NJDEP rated groundwater levels and stream flows in its Coastal South region extremely dry. That region includes Atlantic County. A well that can no longer keep up gets a replacement drilled to a better-producing zone. We seal the old one. Pumps and tanks wear out too. Most submersibles run 10 to 15 years, and a healthy pump starts 6 to 8 times an hour. A pump that kicks on far more often than that needs a look. National cost guides put most well pump repairs between about $350 and $1,500. Published figures put a pressure tank replacement at a few hundred to about $1,600 installed. Either way, the estimate is free.

MUA rules also shape irrigation here. They prohibit using the potable water system for non-residential irrigation. A non-residential user can request a waiver, but it covers no more than 750 square feet. It needs a separate meter, and use is capped at 100,000 gallons from April to September. If a user ignores water conservation, such as watering during rain, the MUA can revoke the waiver. It can then require the user to convert the irrigation to a private well. NJDEP counts an irrigation well as a Category 2, non-potable well, and it needs a permit before drilling. Below 100,000 gallons a day, the well permit is the only state permit it needs. Our irrigation well drilling includes a yield test and a flow rate measurement.

Mays Landing FAQ

Questions From Mays Landing Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Mays Landing. Yours not here? Call and ask the crew directly.

Call (856) 207-7373

What does a new well cost in Mays Landing?
Depth and the pump drive the price. Published national figures run about fifteen to thirty dollars a foot. Complete wells often land between a few thousand and twelve thousand dollars. The NJDEP well permit comes first, and we file it for you. Estimates are free, so call (856) 207-7373 to set one up.
Do I need a permit for a new well in Hamilton Township?
Yes. NJDEP requires a well permit before any well is drilled, built or physically altered. Only a New Jersey licensed well driller can obtain it, so we handle the filing. That covers irrigation wells too, which the state counts as Category 2, non-potable wells. When the well is done, we file the well record with the state.
What happens to my well when my house goes on MUA water?
MUA rules treat a cross connection between its water and any other source as grounds to stop service. So the well cannot feed the same pipes as MUA water. If you no longer need the well, we seal it with grout, placed by tremie from the bottom up. Then we file the decommissioning report with the state.
